The Loom-specific situation
Loom has built-in transcript and AI summary features on its paid tiers (Loom Business and above), so for teams paying for Loom Business, the native transcript is available without external tools. For teams on Loom's free tier (which has very limited transcription), or for ad-hoc transcription of specific Looms outside the Loom workflow, mdisbetter is the alternative. The two-step workflow: download the Loom recording, upload to mdisbetter for transcription.
Downloading Loom recordings
For your own Looms or Looms shared with you with download permission, Loom's share dialog includes a download option (the three-dot menu on the video page). Downloaded files are MP4. For Looms shared with view-only permission (no download), you'd need to ask the recording owner to enable download, or screen-record yourself (with permission) for personal reference. mdisbetter doesn't bypass Loom's access controls.
Use cases for Loom transcription
Engineering: convert architecture walkthroughs and code review Looms to written documentation. Save in docs/ in your repo so the AI coding assistant indexes the verbal explanation alongside the code. Sales: convert sales demo recordings to text for follow-up emails and deal review. Marketing: convert internal stakeholder Loom updates to text for archive and search. Customer success: convert customer-facing Loom walkthroughs to text for help center articles. Async meetings: when your team uses Loom in lieu of synchronous meetings, the transcripts become the meeting notes.
Loom's native transcription vs mdisbetter
Loom Business+ tier includes built-in transcription with reasonable accuracy. For teams paying for Loom Business, that's the natural workflow. mdisbetter is the alternative when: (1) you're on Loom's free or starter tier without robust transcription, (2) you want the transcript outside the Loom UI for archiving in your docs/wiki/Notion, (3) you need transcripts of Looms shared with you that you've downloaded, (4) you want consistent transcription quality across Loom and other video sources (your own uploaded videos, YouTube, etc.) using the same workflow.
For team-wide ongoing Loom workflow, see Loom directly
If your team relies on Loom for daily async communication and you want native transcription, AI summaries, and CRM integration as part of the platform workflow, Loom Business tier provides those features natively. mdisbetter is the right shape for ad-hoc transcription needs, archive purposes, or for teams not on Loom's paid tiers.
