Textbooks have the strongest structure of any document type — chapter, section, sub-section, definition box, key-terms list, problem set. PDF flattens all of it. Markdown conversion brings it back: each chapter is an H1, each section is an H2, definitions stay in dedicated callouts, problem sets are separable for study-guide tooling.
Structure preservation
Textbook conventions vary by publisher but most use: chapter-opener pages with chapter number and title; numbered sections within (1.1, 1.2 …); inset boxes for definitions, theorems, examples, exercises. Our converter recognises all of these. Chapter pages become # Chapter N: Title. Sections become ## 1.2 Section Title. Inset boxes become Markdown blockquotes labelled by their type (> **Definition:** ..., > **Example:** ...).
Study workflows
Once converted, the Markdown plugs into the standard study toolchain: Obsidian for notes and cross-linking, Anki for flashcards (the definitions are pre-formatted for card extraction), an LLM for summary generation per chapter. None of those workflows are practical with raw PDF.

Can I use converted textbooks for Anki flashcards?
Yes — the dedicated definition blocks are easy to extract programmatically. Tools like the Obsidian-Anki plugin, or a few lines of Python with the markdown parser, can turn each > **Definition:** Term: explanation into a Front/Back card.
How are problem sets and exercises handled?
Each problem becomes a list item under an ## Exercises section; numbered exercises preserve their numbering. Where the textbook provides answers in an appendix, the appendix is kept as a separate section so you can study without spoiling answers.
Will figures and diagrams from textbooks come through?
Images are extracted and saved alongside the .md file with their original captions. Photo-style figures convert as raster images; complex schematics or graphs may render at lower fidelity than the original PDF — for high-stakes review, keep the source PDF as a reference.
